Project 365 in 2009 : This is a gallery of my attempt to take a photo a day in 2009. Sometimes my photos relfect just ordinary events of the day, sometimes they are more creative. I started this project so that my camera could come out of it's bag on a regular basis. I am currently using a Nikon D90 and a Canon G10 for all the images posted here. Comments and critiques are always welcomed, or if you don't want to leave a comment you can simply select a photo rank of Yeah or Neah by placing your mouse over the image and clicking on the red thumbs down or green thumbs up.

Another shot from my visit to the zoo on Saturday. I didn't have any time yesterday to take any pictures. I am leaving for Ireland on Friday so this is a very busy week for me as I try to wrap up lose ends in work and prepare for the trip.

What a day we had yesterday weather wise. The temperature hovered around 60 degrees, it was so nice. All the snow that fell on Monday is quickly disappearing. I have been eager to give my new 70-300 lens a test run so I headed off to the zoo. I think even the animals were enjoying the wonderful spring day, they seemed to be more active than usual. I was lucky to catch this cheetah as she was getting ready to settle down for a nap. She went through her cleaning routine then struck this pose, then curled up and went to sleep. I was surprised at how this well this came out considering it was shot through a filthy glass window.

Bermuda Colors

I love this island, it is so beautiful and colorful, the people are so friendly. We went down to St. George yesterday, outside one of the outdoor restaurants were a few tables with umbrellas that were closed because of the winds. This is a close up of the different colors of the umbrella.

"Winter Blues"

As much as I complain about the snow, it has provided us with some spectacular scenery. I drove by this on my way to work yesterday, there were still a few flurries falling from our most recent storm. On a typical day you wouldn't look twice at this scene. However, this morning with the sun beginning to break through the clouds and the snow still clinging to the branches, it was just breathtaking.

I processed the raw image using Capture NX2. I have CS3 but it does not recognize raw images from the D90. I have a 60 day trial on this software, trying to decide whether to purchase this or upgrade PS to CS4.

March has started off with a roar, a Nor'easter dumped over a foot of snow on us. The storm made for a horrible commute to work. The plows were out in full force trying to clear the roads. Hopefully (fingers crossed), this is the last snow storm we will see this winter.

Natures Fireworks

While on a walk yesterday, I came across a pine tree that had been recently sprayed by the underground sprinklers. The water droplets were hanging from each of the the needles and it reminded me of fireworks in the sky. I applied the Indian Summer Color Ex Pro filter which brought out these red tones, which transformed the image into what my imagination saw.

"Multiplicity"

I bought this wall hanging for my daughter. It's purpose is to hang jewelry on all the various nooks and crannies. There is a floor lamp close by with three adjustable lamps which I strategically angled to get the desired shadows I was looking for. I converted this in raw and selected a white balance for fluorescent lights which changed the light blue wall to a soft peachy color, nice surprising effect. I finished this off in PS by applying Topaz Adjust and Simplify for the final image.

As I left my office last night, I saw this squirrel hanging out in the mailbox. We have an outdoor balcony that overlooks wetlands. The previous tenants of the space put a mailbox out on the deck and stored binoculars in it for bird watchers. No clue why the door is open, but the squirrel liked it. I shot this with my G10 through glass, not the greatest quality but it was just too cute!

The quote from "The Twilight Zone" pretty much sums up the effect I was aiming for, but I don't feel I quite got there. I was fighting with the focusing on my G10, I will have to try this again with my DSLR.

"Who's turn is it to turn the hot tub back on!"

Sorry, but I had to post yet another snow scene. As of the last storm, the Boston area has received 44.7 inches to date. Probably half of that is still on the ground. We have already exceeded our average snowfall for the season. I wonder how much more the next two months will bring, brrrrrrrr!

This is a sculpture that is in my town, when I saw it buried in the snow I just knew that I had to photograph it. The name of the piece is "Touching Souls" by Mico Kaufman. The piece consists of four children, native-American, European-American, African-America and Asian-American, sitting on the ground, arms leaning back, legs outstretched and apart, with the soles of their shoes/boots touching all of which cannot be seen with the recent snowfall we have had.

Tree Art

I came across several trees that had been recently cut down due to severe damage from the wild weather we have been having. I liked the design in this tree stump, kind of like a tree within a tree. The stump was very wet from all the recent rain, but it gave the wood a beautiful reddish tone.

Big Al

Yes another photo of one of the inhabitants of my fish tank. We call this snail Big AL, mostly due to the fact that the minute we brought him home and placed him in the tank, he went straight to work cleaning the tank. I noticed that he was happily eating the algae off of the glass and I was fascinated with the details of his underbelly, especially his mouth which appears to have teeth of some sort. I shot this with my little Canon G10, this camera is great for closeup photography as I don't have a macro lens (yet) for my Nikon.

This really needs to be seen in the largest size for the details in the mouth.

This was a street vendor in Dublin. I loved the posters and he couldn't have posed more perfectly if I had asked him.

I am still trying to get back in the swing of things after my trip. I need to get caught up on all your photos, I have missed so much. I am back filling my dailies with one shot from each day that I was away. I need to work on my workflow, I am a bit overwhelmed with the amount of photos I need to go through.

"The Early Bird Catches the Worm"

I was sitting on my front stairs enjoying the nice spring day with my dog. I saw the Robin in my yard, i went inside to get my camera, anticipating that the bird would probably be gone when I returned. I was pleasantly surprised to see her still standing there, so I started to try and get a shot of her when she reached down and pulled up this worm. She was pretty far away from me and the reach of my camera so this is an extreme crop.

Sometimes you find potential photo subjects in the least likely places. This was a floral arrangement in the ladies room of a Thai Food restaurant I was having lunch in. Of course being part of the daily smugmug group, I had my camera with me :D!

Zakim Bridge

Follow up shot to yesterdays. As you come out of the tunnel heading north away from the city you are greeted with this view of the Zakim Bridge. Although I am not thrilled with the tunnel, I do think that this bridge is a stunning replacement for the old green eye sore that used to take you into the city. In case you are concerned I was not driving the vehicle, had the rare pleasure to be a front seat passenger. :) Originally intended to post the color version, but when I was processing the Raw image, I played with the selective adjustment tool and liked the effect, liked it even more when I desaturated the image.

Do you remember the game "Candy Land"? I played it as a child as did my own children. Who can forget Gramma Nut, King Kandy, the Gingerbread People. It was one of the first board games I bought for my children and we would play it over and over again.

Another Irish post today, but this time out of the city! This was taken at the Rock of Cashel, the castle was behind me, when I looked over the wall I was pleasantly surprised to see the sheep there.

After being away for 10 days, I am swamped both at home and work and have had no time to get out and take pictures. Hopefully this weekend I can get back in the swing of things.

Hamilton, Bermuda

Typical Bermuda scene, I wish I could be there when the lighting was better, this was taken at noon time. I love the color of the chairs and this picture does not do justice to the beautiful blue water.

The sky was so clear and a beautiful shade of blue when I left work last night. I didn't have my tripod so I tried to steady my camera on the fence and quickly shot this image. I was in such a rush to try and capture this scene before the sun set completely that I forgot to reset my ISO setting to manual. The camera used an ISO of 3200 for this image. I did apply a small amount of noise reduction, but overall not bad. The Nikon D90 is outstanding in low light situations.

A view of the pool at the hotel we are staying in. We haven't had much time to be outdoors since arriving yesterday. Our son and his girlfriend met us at the hotel and we went out to dinner last night. We were hoping to be able to see Michael again today before we head home, but it is not to be. Michael is a student at Maine Maritime Academy and his schools training ship is heading out on a 60 day trip. We were disappointed that he is unable to get leave so that we could see him one more time before we head home.

Another shot from the Memorial Day Parade yesterday. The Boys Scouts put together a pretty cool float. It depicted the different aspects of camping. There was a tent, a pond with scouts fishing, campfire, and the final piece was this outhouse. I didn't expect this when it went by. What a good sport this guy is!

This is the spiral stairway that is located in the main entrance of the "Old South Meeting House" in Boston. I picked up my daughter from school and took her out for lunch. Definitely one of the perks of having her attend a local college. The weather was wonderful today, mid 40's and the sun was out. We had a nice afternoon walking around Fanueil Hall and the Freedom Trail. Being Super Bowl Sunday, everything was pretty deserted.

Ugghhhh, as I post this daily the weather forecast is reporting that another snow storm will be upon us on Tuesday. Spring can't come soon enough.

My first post for the second year that I will be participating in the dailies. Quiet laid back evening last night. We went out to dinner with my brother in law and family and celebrated the New Year along with my sister-in-laws birthday. I was home safely in bed sleeping long before the ball dropped to officially welcome in the new year.

Watercolors

Another shot from Sunday, this time only the reflection of the colors in the water. Thank you all very much for all the comments on yesterdays photo, I am blown away that it took the number one spot.
